Nearly whole length, seated to right in a wooden library chair, head turned towards viewer; grey hair; moustache and whiskers; white collar and shirt; black tie; black undress gown of Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.) with scarlet hood over dark clothes; gold-rimmed eye-glasses hanging from waistcoat button; hands clasped, resting on lap; above to right, three shields of arms: Oriel College (top left), Magdalen College (top right), and University College (below centre).
'Act of Convocation: That the Curators of the Bodleian Library be authorized to transfer from the Picture Gallery to the Examination Schools ten portraits [including] Goldwin Smith, by Grier' (Oxford University Gazette, 13 Nov 1929, p.144)
