The
intention is to digitise the Gough Map, then have the
capability to overlay the map data from this fourteenth-century
map on to a twenty-first-century cartographic grid. This
is the most important map in the University’s holdings,
and the Oxford Digital Library Development Fund could
be the vehicle capable of delivering this map to a wide
academic audience.
A further objective is to bring the map “to life”. Much
of its content has never been fully understood due to
its relatively small size, so, using the National Library
of Scotland’s Project Pont as a model, it has been successful
in making buildings and urban layouts visible to the
naked eye for the first time.
