| Summary |
The
Bodleian Broadside Ballads Project ran from 1995 to 1999
and provided (i) a complete online web-based catalogue
of the 30,000 ballads owned by the Library; (ii) link
to online images of the ballad sheets so that full texts
and pictures could be viewed; (iii) an iconographic index
to the pictorial images present on the ballad sheets (about
17,000 in all). Use of the ballads has grown by about
2000% since the resource was made available in September
1999. They now propose to use the ODL's Finereader software
to test its full-text recognition capabilities on the
already digitised ballad sheets in order to allow full-text
search and retrieval on the content of the ballads. If
the pilot is sucessful, the academic benefits that would
accrue from the full-scale application of OCR to the ballads
are multi-disciplinary, and apply to both teaching and
research.
